I moved to Wellington for university and it is still very much my favourite city in New Zealand. When I was 18, I woke up one morning and told my Mum I wanted to move to Wellington, the next day we were on a plane and the following Monday, I started university. It was the best impulsive decision I have ever made!
Wellington was voted to be ‘The coolest little Capital in the world‘ by Lonely Planet in 2011 and it is such a cool city with so many cafes, bars and restaurants (more per capita than New York). Its such as walkable city too, so with all the walking you’ll be doing, you should treat yourself to a few meals out.
Fidel’s is another goodie on Cuba Street. It is a cool spot for brunch or dinner with a great atmosphere, the interior is eclectic and colourful. The food is delicious with some healthy options, the best milkshakes and a cabinet full of goodies. I love the Timtam cake (its gluten free), its perfect to share with a friend over a coffee or shake.
I was a regular at Seize when I lived in Wellington. There is a fantastic range of gluten free, dairy free and refined sugar free sweet treats, which are perfect with a coffee. With lots of fresh salads to choose from, wholesome smoothies and acai bowls. The staff are super friend and I love the decor.
Loretta is on Cuba Street and has a cool minimalist Scandinavian vibe, with long wooden tables. I love the gluten free seed bread. Loretta is great for brunch or lunch. They have good coffee and a huge selection of cakes on the counter.
Prefab is casual, modern and vibrant. It is always buzzing but you never have to wait long for food, so don’t let the queue put you off! The menu is seasonal and the food is so good. There is outdoor seating too, which makes a great option on a sunny day.
Six Barrel Soda
Six Barrel is a cute, sunny cafe up the stairs on Eva Street, which is a little alley with some cool cafes and restaurants. They are known for their soda syrups, some of the delicious flavours they have are raspberry and lemon, ginger, vanilla cream and kola nut. Its the perfect place to sit and enjoy a soda on a sunny day. They have bottomless coffee too, so you can take your laptop and do some work or people watch for a while too.
Plum is on the bustling Cuba Street, right near the bucket fountain – so ideal for people watching. I love sitting in the sun outside watching the world go by. My favourite go-to is the Veggie Plumster, the perfect comfort brunch, perfect for if you’ve had a big night the night before.
I lived just up the street from Aro Cafe for a year and definitely did not frequent here enough. The coffee and food are great, its a good brunch spot on Aro Street.
Raglan Roast has some of the best coffee in Wellington. Its cheap and they have a great loyalty scheme. Its the perfect spot to sit back on the couches or takeaway and go for a wander.
Wellington is such a cool city with so much to offer. I could write so much more, but we’ll save that for another day!
